Christmas, Part 1: Papa & Mimi's House

Our Christmas vacation began with a trip Down East. Thanks for a wonderful time (and really good pizza!), Papa and Mimi!

"Scootering"

Riley said he and Donovan were twins on that day... and they got twin race cars!

Watch out, Christmas villagers - it's Donovan Kong!

Exploring the redneckest (I know that's not a word, but it needs to be) Christmas lights display this side of I-95...

SNOW!!!

We got about 8 inches of snow here! It started yesterday at lunchtime, so Riley got to start his Christmas vacation two hours early! It was also very, very windy yesterday, so we waited until today to go out in it.

There was a layer of ice on top of the snow, which was like adding another couple of feet to the slide! Whee!

Donovan didn't have quite so much fun... it was hard to walk on the ice and he had a runny nose. :(
Nothing bothered Riley, though... not even rolling around in it!

Congratulations, Riley!

Riley was one of his school's Star Students of the Week this past week! He got his picture on a special bulletin board, he was interviewed on the intercom during the morning announcements, and all his classmates drew pictures and wrote notes for him. They said things like "Riley is a good friend," "Riley is smart," and "Riley is nice."

Riley was also one of the winners of the annual PTA Reflections Contest from his school! This year's theme was "Beauty is..." Riley took this photo of a lake near our house all by himself. He got a sun flare in the photo without even trying!

Way to go, Riley!!!

On the -11th Day of Christmas, my parents gave to me...

Last night, Joe came home from Target with my Christmas present (the movie "Julie & Julia"). He rounded up the boys and a gift bag and was trying to get them to give me my gift. However, Riley thought that meant he should get his gift, too. (They each get one present from Mommy and Daddy; the rest are from Santa and family.) I asked Riley if he really wanted his present already, even though it's not Christmas and I hadn't wrapped it yet, and he said yes. (Of course.) So... I hastily put Riley's gift in a bag and stuck a bow on the shopping bags that had been keeping Donovan's present hidden. Then I made Riley change into some Christmasy pajamas - even though they are getting too small, they were still better than the Halloween pajamas he did have on!

Waiting for Daddy to bring out the good stuff... If I had known they were both going to smile so nicely for the camera, I'd have changed Donovan into Christmas jammies, too!

Martha Stewart would not approve of this "wrapping," but I didn't have a gift bag big enough for a scooter!

Budding photographer Riley was really excited to get this camera, even though he already knew that it would be his gift this year!

I love how Donovan says "gooter" for "scooter."

Merry almost Christmas!!

Hark, the Herald Angels Sing!

Donovan's preschool put on its annual Christmas Program this past Thursday, December 10. The Doodlebugs (a.k.a. the 2-year-olds) sang three songs by themselves, plus "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" at the finale.

Donovan actually did sing along!

Ring those bells!

Great job, Donovan!!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Grandma Ball for my new camera! These were my first pictures taken indoors... I'm still reading the manual and practicing up for Christmas!

The Nutcracker!

Riley has been wanting to see "The Nutcracker" for at least a year. One of our favorite restaurants, Mellow Mushroom, is right across the street from The Stevens Center, the theater for the UNC School of the Arts. Last year, when the big Nutcracker posters went up around the theater, Riley took notice. He has loved the music and nutcrackers in general ever since. So this year, Grandma and Grandpa gave Riley and me tickets to see "The Nutcracker!" I showed Riley the tickets and had him sound out the words. When he realized what it meant, he was ecstatic!

December 5 finally arrived... We put on our Christmasy sweaters and were ready to go!

The weather outside was frightful, but it didn't diminish Riley's excitement.

We sat on the second row of the balcony. We both liked it that we could see everything, including the orchestra pit!

Riley loved the experience... though he would have been content to leave after the part where The Nutcracker turns back into Sascha. He says his favorite part was when The Nutcracker stabbed the Mouse King. He asked me several times in the second act when it was going to be over, and I could tell he had used up all his attention, but he remained quiet and listened to the music. I enjoyed every minute of it, and I also kept thinking that, even when Donovan is 5, I bet he won't be that still and quiet!

Before the show, Riley didn't want to stand by this big nutcracker in the lobby for a picture, but he changed his mind on our way out.
After the show, Joe and Donovan met us at Mellow Mushroom for dinner. The Winston-Salem Christmas parade went by while we ate, so we had to step over to the windows and watch for a few minutes. We had dessert at Kernel Kustard (conveniently next door) and watched the end of the parade there.
If you look really closely at the background, you can see the red and green lights atop the Reynolds building, which is the smaller-but-older sister of the Empire State building.
Thank you so much, Grandma and Grandpa, for a wonderful outing!

Which tree did this apple fall from?

Somehow, Riley discovered algebra... I think I may, once upon a time, have told him that in some math problems there is an "x" instead of a number. But that, as far as I know, is the only introduction to algebra he's ever had. So just try to imagine all our stunned faces as Riley wrote "x + x = 2" on his MagnaDoodle and announced, "The x stands for 1." Then he continued with x=2, x=4, x=8, and x=10.

(Update 12/1: This morning I talked to Riley's teacher, and she said the class had done some "baby algebra just for fun." Is there going to be anything left for Riley to learn by the time he gets to 10th grade??)

Later that same night, Riley was talking (once again) about college. For quite some time, Riley has averred that he will go to Auburn. So I told him, "Where you go to college may depend on what state we live in at the time." Then I also said that people choose their college based on what they want to learn. He said, "I want to learn everything!" "But what do you want to be when you grow up?" I asked. He replied, "I'm going to be a different thing every month!"

Fortunately, I had the wherewithal to grab a pen and notebook so that I could write down Riley's career plans:

January: train driver
February: builder
March: digger
April: soccer player
May: crane driver
June: mascot person at Disney World
July: teacher
August: basketball player
September: farmer
October: football player
November: boy cheerleader and person in Macy's Parade
December: person working in a shop selling Christmas stuff to people

So be nice to Riley - someday he will be able to hook us up with all kinds of tickets!
